Il cantautore, compositore di colonne sonore e pianista Patrick Watson ha annunciato il nuovo album Uh Oh, in uscita il 26 settembre, via Secret City Records, insieme al nuovo singolo e video "Peter and the Wolf", disponibile in radio e su tutte le piattaforme dal 4 giugno.

Le 11 nuove canzoni vedono Watson riflettere sull’idea che la vita sia una serie di "uh oh": quella piccola espressione che usiamo di fronte a tutto, dagli incidenti dell’infanzia fino alle nostre ansie più profonde. Per Watson questa frase è riaffiorata quando si è trovato di fronte al più grande "uh oh" che un cantante possa affrontare: la perdita della voce. Non sapendo se e quando avrebbe potuto tornare a cantare, il nuovo album ha preso una direzione diversa: una raccolta di collaborazioni con amici e sconosciuti, artisti di cui desiderava sentire la voce. Uh Oh rappresenta la visione che Watson ha inseguito per tutta la vita, la sintesi di 20 anni di esplorazioni musicali ed esperienze vissute, che gli hanno permesso di trasformare i film nella sua mente, nei suoni e nelle parole che ora ci avvolgono.
La maggior parte delle canzoni di Uh Oh vede Watson e la sua band — i suoi storici compagni di viaggio, il collaboratore e polistrumentista Mishka Stein, Olivier Fairfield e la co-vocalist Ariel Engle (alias La Force) — affiancati da importanti collaborazioni: dalle voci iconiche che ha idolatrato per anni come Martha Wainwright, a quelle scoperte scorrendo Instagram, Solann; da un’artista del Québec da lui sempre molto amata, Klò Pelgag, a fenomeni internazionali come MARO, Hohnen Ford e November Ultra; da una pop star vincitrice del JUNO Award Charlotte Cardin, a una vincitrice del premio Félix, Anachnid, fino a un’amica conosciuta mentre lavorava al bancone del bar sotto casa, Charlotte Oleena.
“Every singer has these different magical powers on this record, and each song kind of represents that,”, ha affermato Patrick.
Watson — vincitore del Polaris Music Prize, la cui canzone “Je te laisserai des mots” è recentemente diventata la prima canzone in lingua francese a superare 1 miliardo di stream su Spotify — riflette sulla situazione di fare musica dopo aver perso la voce dicendo: “Obviously, I like singing for people, but I was really enjoying my Modular [synth] and diving into instrumental music”, un'inclinazione naturale per Watson, che ad oggi ha composto oltre 15 colonne sonore per film. “But then I was like, ‘Oh, it’d be cool to write songs for all these different singers that I really want to hear sing—I’ll find my way out of this situation that way.’ Because my voice wasn’t supposed to come back. And when it did, I just thought having all these other singers featured was still a cooler idea for a record than me singing alone.”.
Sentendo come i brani di Uh Oh scorrono alla perfezione l’uno nell’altro, non si direbbe mai che siano stati registrati in luoghi diversi — Montréal, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Città del Messico, Parigi — con un approccio minimalista, utilizzando solo due microfoni, e in gran parte con una o due take. E, allo stesso modo, forse nessuno immaginerebbe che Watson abbia passato due mesi a studiare “Up” di Cardi B per ottenere il mix perfetto.
Insieme all’annuncio di oggi, Watson condivide "Peter and the Wolf", un brano inquietante e onirico ispirato ai fantasmi di New Orleans e all’oscurità totale di una foresta nella notte. Il video, diretto da Patrick Watson e SAM WOY, è stato girato nella campagna del Québec.

Patrick ha affermato sulla canzone: “This is something I never could’ve written when I was younger. When I originally wrote this track, I was with my partner Heather in the woods and she was talking about rewriting Peter and the Wolf. When you’re in the forest at night and it’s cloudy and the dark hits the tree line, it just goes pitch black. So I wrote the music thinking about that—not really a wolf, but that pitch-blackness. And then I went to New Orleans with Heather O’Neill and in the middle of the night, I took a walk outside, and New Orleans is just filled with ghosts at night— it’s a really magical place. I was all by myself and then this car came slowly down the street. It was this really classy car and there was this crazy low-end just purring from far away and kind of rolling towards me. In the low end it was shaking all the houses and all the windows, the way it moved was so graceful and slow, it was quite wonderful.
There was just something about when I was staring at that car that reminded me of when I was staring into the forest at night. I was staring at the same ghost in a lot of ways—it felt like I was in a dream as it was coming towards me. And I thought, ‘I’m going to write this song as if the car is the wolf and I’m Peter.’ The first half of the song is about that, and for the second half of the song, we went to this really far away middle-of-nowhere swamp where we all went through these crazy trailer places where it looked like they were going to kill us, but then we got to the end of the swamp, and it was this beautiful emerald green everywhere we looked and it was like this thing that you wanted to taste but you knew it would kill you in a way. While we were down there, we ran into a lot of French speaking people which was really fun since I'm from Quebec.
I decided to make the swamp a mermaid because you want to get into it and swim in it but the moment you do that it will just swallow you like it swallows everything that flows into it, It's interesting because that place is basically all of America flowing down there through it so that's a very interesting sensation.”.
Watson ha già condiviso due brani tratti da Uh Oh: “Silencio”, in collaborazione con l’artista francese November Ultra, e “Gordon in the Willows”, insieme alla connazionale di Montréal Charlotte Cardin. "Silencio" è stato il primo assaggio di questo nuovo progetto, in cui Watson ha rivelato per la prima volta di aver perso la voce, scoprendo — tra le altre cose — anche il potere del silenzio. È stato registrato presso lo Studio Rubin Alterio, un vecchio loft d’artista a Parigi. Gordon in the Willows, invece, è stato scritto e registrato da Watson e Cardin in un piccolo villaggio sul lago in Québec e, in occasione della sua uscita lo scorso inverno, è stato eseguito dal vivo durante un’apparizione a sorpresa sulla cima del Mont Royal di Montréal.

Patrick Watson composes, performs, and records his albums with his long-time bandmates, collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Mishka Stein, and Olivier Fairfield. The Canadian artist reached gold and platinum status in multiple countries (including five certified gold albums in Canada), and his shows sell out around the world.
