Guitarist Loke Risberg has been through some life-altering experiences but his music remains compellingly consistent and on his first solo album, he picks up the thread that began to spool on his previous CAM JAZZ album Boiler Room. Mixing tunes and more abstract improvisations, SOLO unfolds Loke’s evolving relationship with the guitar and with his own musical explorations, which have taken from young Hendrix admirer to one of the most interesting and constantly surprising guitar players on the scene today. It’s thoughtful rather than fiery music, but intelligence offers a more lasting form of excitement than mere pyrotechnics. Prepare to be led by an artist with a built-in musical compass.
