I LEGGENDARI BROOKLYN FUNK ESSENTIALS TORNANO CON “LIFE DURING WARTIME” — UNA POTENTE RILETURA IN CHIAVE FUNK DEL CLASSICO FIRMATO DAVID BYRNE
Acclaimed funk collective Brooklyn Funk Essentials return with ‘Life During Wartime’, an afro-funk reimagining of the Talking Heads’ 1979 classic, out now on Dorado Records. Lead vocals come from Desmond Foster, who performed the track nightly while touring with David Byrne in the early 2000s.
Originally recorded in 2007 but unreleased until now, this version was reborn in January 2025 during sessions for their upcoming eighth studio album ‘Black Butterfly’. Driven by Hux Nettermalm’s drums, Lati Kronlund’s bass, and Foster’s guitars and vocals, the new cut features horn arrangements by Loïc Gayot, joined by Ebba Åsman (trombone) and Jessica Pina (trumpet).
BFE—founded by Kronlund and hip hop legend Arthur Baker—have spent over three decades fusing funk with soul, jazz, Latin, hip hop and spoken word. Their cult debut ‘Cool & Steady & Easy’ (1994) scored underground hits like ‘Take The L Train’ and ‘Big Apple Boogaloo’, with Billboard naming it Best Alternative R&B Album. It now boasts over 16 million Spotify streams.
With seven albums under their belt—including ‘Intuition’ (2023) and ‘Stay Good’ (2019) featuring Alison Limerick—BFE continue to evolve their genre-bending legacy. Recent singles like ‘Scream!’, ‘AA Side Single’, and ‘How Happy’ earned praise from Jazz FM and Blues & Soul, hailed as “Afro Funk blessedness” and “funk behemoths.”
Now, ‘Life During Wartime’ brings their timeless groove into sharp focus—urgent, funky, and made for now.
