L’edizione deluxe conterrà oltre sei ore di filmati e più di due ore di musica in 3 CD e 3 DVD, un taccuino di 80 pagine con i facsimili degli appunti originali di Springsteen, scritti durante le sessioni di registrazione, che comprendono testi alternativi a quelli pubblicati, idee di canzone, dettagli di registrazione e note personali ed immagini mai viste prima.

«”Darkness” era il mio disco “samurai”», scrive Springsteen. «Ridotto all’osso e pronto a rombare. Ma la musica che non avevo inserito nell’album è fondamentale». Per la prima volta, i fan avranno accesso a due dischi che in tutto contengono 21 canzoni inedite provenienti dalle sessioni di registrazione di “Darkness”, canzoni che, come scrive Springsteen, «forse avrebbero potuto, o dovuto, essere pubblicate dopo “Born to Run” e prima della raccolta di canzoni che “Darkness on the Edge of Town” ».
Nell’album troviamo: la straordinaria versione rock di "Racing in the Street", le inedite registrazioni originali di "Because the Night", "Fire", e "Rendezvous", la suprema opera pop "Someday (We'll Be Together)", la divertente "Ain't Good Enough for You", la superba performance vocale su base soul in "The Brokenhearted", l’incalzante "Breakaway" e il capolavoro finemente orchestrato che dà il titolo alla raccolta "The Promise". Tutte le 21 canzoni sono state mixate da Bob Clearmountain, collaboratore di Springsteen da tempo immemore. Secondo il manager e produttore di lunga data Jon Landau, «non c’è una carta debole nel mazzo. "The Promise" è davvero una grande esperienza d’ascolto».
